这艘渔船本来就不适合海上航行，加上严重超载，最终招致翻船。而当意大利海岸警卫队到达翻船现场时，少数幸存的移民因争先恐后地爬救生筏，导致拥挤过度，救生筏下沉。据估计，沉船上可能只有不到10%的移民能够幸存下来。
