The Chinese artist Professor Jiang Heng will handover his painting “Love of Asia, Flying Butterflies” to Director-General Irina Bokova in a ceremony on 10 July 2012 at UNESCO Headquarters.
The artwork was created in celebration of the 16th Asian Games, held in Guangzhou, China, in November 2010, and is dedicated to the intercultural dialogue and understanding. Professor Jiang Heng originally presented his donation to the Director-General at the United Nations Pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
"Love of Asia, Flying Butterflies" is the centerpiece of a series of oil paintings inspired by the flags of 45 participating nations and regions in the 16th Asian Games. The flags metamorphose into butterflies, full of vibrant spirit, which symbolize the Games' motto – “Thrilling Games, Harmonious Asia". These artworks are intended to convey the spirit of the rapprochement of cultures and nations through artistic interaction.
The ceremony will be followed by a cocktail reception of honor.
