当我接到一个好朋友的电话，说起他的女儿正在接受医疗急救时，我所有的自怨自艾都烟消云散了。我非常幸运，有一些特别铁的朋友伴我度过人生的起起伏伏，对此我非常感激。要是我现在在家的话，肯定第一时间跑到他家去陪伴他，可惜我正穿越杜塞尔多夫的郊区，由于信号差，听电话都受局限性。我一直觉得涉及医疗的的谈话特别困难，因为男性的天性是想立即找出方案来解决问题，但这个情景下人们往往不需要答案，他们只需要有人来倾听他们的问题和痛苦。从杜塞尔多夫出发的早上天气很好，我的路线是沿着莱茵河前进。雪琳来陪伴我的日子我早上总觉得加倍地难开始启步，我不仅要和二十多英里的路程较劲，还要放弃一整天和雪琳呆在一起的机会和时间啊。
到达历史名镇凯泽斯韦尔特(Kaiserwerth)时，话题来了。我在镇中心广场的一个咖啡馆里停歇上网，快速浏览了一下关于这所小镇的信息，没想到居然看见了弗洛伦斯·南丁格尔的名字，“现代护理学之母”，“维多利亚时代网”上有篇文章这样写道:
“在1850年7月31日至8月13日期间，南丁格尔首次拜访凯泽斯韦尔特的基督教女执事研究所(Institute of Protestant Deaconesses)。该机构于1833年为医治救助贫困者而建，并发展成一所女教师和女护士的培训学校。她的造访使其后来令护士作为女性的一种职业成为可能。1851年她在凯泽斯韦尔特作为病患护士受训四个月。”
另一个网站引用她自己的话，说造访凯泽斯韦尔特是她人生的转折点。正因为此次造访，她决心投身于医护他人的行列中去。这对当时一位来自富庶家庭的贵小姐来说可不容易，当时这样出身的姑娘们应该借助父母之命、媒妁之言，找个门当户对的夫家，最好还能让自己家的影响力发扬光大。然而弗洛伦斯却毅然决定放弃这些，选择看护他人。
当然这样的决定并不完全来自于受训的经历，还有便是遇到了时机 ，那就是三年后的克里米亚战争，1854年的“伦敦时代报”记录了英军士兵与对手法军士兵相比，缺少医护，吃苦受难的情况。时任英国战争大臣的西德尼·赫伯特(Sidney Herbert)是弗洛伦斯的一个亲密朋友，他致信南丁格尔询问她是否可以领队去克里米亚前线救护英军士兵。“提灯女神”的传奇和英国护理专业就此诞生。
